Know the Magnificent Zanskar Valley

Zangskar valley is situated to the south west of Leh, bounded by the Himalayan and Zangskar ranges. Zangskar, which is the most secluded valley, encompassed two chief valleys of Stod and Lunak, which congregate beneath at Padum. The valley is located at a height of 13,154 ft. The area remains difficult to get to for nearly 7 months in the year.

As winter advances the river ice ups on the surface. Zanskaris walk down the frozen river to get to the Indus River in Nimoo village, which is identified as the Chadar trek. The way from Kargil to Padum via Penzi La is the only motor able road to arrive at Zangskar valley, which continues to be open from June to September.

Tourism is almost certainly the main disturbance that Zanskar has experienced during modern times. The opening of this area to visitors has brought reimbursements such as the funding of schools and the reinstatement of monasteries and roads.

Once the Capital of the Zangskar valley, Padum which is the sub-tehsil of Zangskar, is the managerial headquarter of the area and perhaps the most crowded settlement of Zangskar. There is a little market along the central road with hotels, restaurants and shops. The town has a recently built Mosque and a newly formed Muslim society.

Stakrimo Gonpa is a 10th century tombstone engraved on a massive rock near the river bank, gives an epigraphic proof that the county was influenced by Buddhism since prehistoric period.
The main tourist places in Zangskar are the primeval Buddhist monasteries like Zongkhul, Bardan, Phuktal and Sunni Palace. The loveliness of these monasteries is beyond explanation and the majority of the monasteries can be visited in a day.
